How and when you know that it’s time to refill your Zippo?
The wicks are not designed to burn, so when the wick starts burning, then it’s an indication that it’s time to refill. and obviously, the new ones should be filled before use. Now let’s follow this process before lighting up a cigarette, joint, or pipe and before camping or trekking.
Step 1: Remove the inside unit from the case.
Step 2: Turn the felt pad over and lift it up (it reads- ‘LIFT TO FUEL’) by placing a needle nose or an unfolded tool in the tiny hole if the pad is hard, Now you will see the packing material in the fuel chamber.
Step 3: Slowly saturate the packing material by squeezing the lighter fluid Can for about 5 seconds. Then wait for a couple of seconds, then repeat filling again. Stop filling when the fuel reaches the top of the packing or begins to change color. Do not overfill, if overfilled, the lighter will leak fuel. Avoid getting fluid on the skin as it is a skin irritant.
Tip: Try to fill the inside unit by putting it upside down in the case so that the fuel doesn’t create a mess.
Step 4: Now close the felt pad gently to its normal position. It’s definitely best to not light up the lighter when it’s outside of the case to even check it also.
Step 5: After filling/ refilling, insert the inside unit into the case making sure to wipe any excess fluid from the lighter and your hands before igniting the lighter. Let the Zippo sit and absorb the fluid for 1-2 minutes. While waiting, wash your hands.
Step 6: Now strike the flip wheel in an upward (opposite) direction a couple of times, then roll it downwards and here it goes, your lighter is ready for use.
Tip: Repeat this refilling process every week on Sunday (or as needed according to your use) as a household ritual to not run out of flame when needed.
Caution:
- If you are planning to keep it in your pocket, I suggest keeping it bottom down.
- Zippo Lighter fluid will evaporate when not in use also, so be sure to always keep the lid closed.
